Risk Factors for Atherosclerosis: Atherosclerosis, sometimes called hardening of the arteries, occurs when sticky fat deposits called plaque adhere to the walls of blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood throughout the body. These deposits limit blood flow and can lead to heart attack or stroke. According to The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute risk factors for developing atherosclerosis include:
Ø Above-normal amounts of LDL (Bad) cholesterol, low levels of HDL (Good) cholesterol.
Ø Uncontrolled high blood pressure & diabetes.
Ø Smoking and being overweight.
Ø Getting insufficient exercise.
Ø Eating an unhealthy diet.
Ø Getting older.
Ø Having family history of heart disease at young age.
